WHY DO YOU NEED A CROWN

It is highly recommended that your dentist build up your tooth and make a crown for protection. The crown will typically increase the function and longevity of your tooth.

Other treatments that may require a crown are:

  • Implants
  • Endodontically treated teeth
  • Surveyed crown
  • Aesthetics

METHOD OF CROWNING

Crown Dental RestorationThe most common method of crowning a tooth involves using a dental impression of a prepared tooth by a dentist to fabricate the crown outside of the mouth. The crown can then be inserted at a subsequent dental appointment. Using this indirect method of tooth restoration allows use of strong restorative materials requiring time consuming fabrication methods requiring intense heat, such as casting metal or firing porcelain which would not be possible to complete inside the mouth.

The preparation for a crown is similar for all the different types, after a discussion with you about the type of crown we are going to make, the tooth is very carefully shaped at your first appointment. An impression is taken and a custom made temporary crown is made to fit your tooth. The color and any characteristics of your new crown are also decided at this appointment. We often ask you to bring photographs of your teeth with you to this appointment so we can ensure your new crown will match your teeth perfectly.

BRIDGES

BridgeA bridge, also known as a fixed partial denture, is a used to replace a missing tooth by joining permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants.

To explain this as easy as possible, the abutment teeth are reduced in size to accommodate the material to be used to restore the size and shape of the original teeth in a correct alignment and contact with the opposing teeth

There are different types of bridges, depending on how they are fabricated and the way they anchor to the adjacent teeth. Conventionally fixed bridges are made using porcelain to high nobel metal, however they can be made of porcelain or composite resin.
